Chapter Nine

“I really have to get some work done today, April.”

They had spent almost four days in his room. The bonding period wasn’t close to completion, but he was beginning to feel the pressing obligations of the vineyard.

“Okay, I can spend the time downstairs if you’re more comfortable that way.”

He watched her as she braided her wet hair. She said that it dried better if she braided it wet. They had finished their leisurely showering and were getting ready for breakfast.

“Did you see Matt when you went downstairs?” he asked.

“No, but I heard his shower running. I set the batter last night for cranberry muffins and was able to make two batches this morning. I set them out and came upstairs back to bed. I wonder if Matt ate any of them,” she mused.

For the first two days, Gabe didn’t know that April had been getting up at five to put a pot of coffee on and put muffins out for Matt. Yesterday, he was sleeping light enough that the separation pain woke him up. When he asked her what she was doing, she replied that she heard Matt get up, and she didn’t think it was fair that Gabe got a big breakfast in the morning and Matt had to make his own coffee and make do with whatever he could get his hands on.

Gabe didn’t understand the knotting in his chest, in his gut, when she explained that his twin needed to be taken care of. He pushed aside the feeling now, and sat on the edge of the bed, waiting for her to finish. How was he going to get work done with April around? He would have to figure something out because he needed to check the fields.

“I have to work outside today, April.”

She froze while tying the end of her braid. “Okay. I know you probably don’t want someone to be following you everywhere you go, but I don’t think we have a choice, Gabe.”

“Do you mind coming out to check the vines with me?”

Her face brightened and she linked her hands together. She was practically bouncing. “I’d love to! I haven’t seen any part of your vineyard besides the house and whatever I can see from the balcony.” Her cheeks colored a pretty pink. Gabe grinned when he realized that she was probably blushing because she remembered how they had made love on the balcony yesterday. He leaned her over the railing and made love to her as they both watched the sunset. He didn’t think he would ever get tired of seeing her blush.

“Okay, let’s get some breakfast and then we’ll head out to check the fields. Once that’s done with, I have to check with the fermentation plant, and the restaurant.”

“The restaurant?”

“We have a small restaurant we own. It’s casual, but we have wine tasting set up there along with a store where tourists can buy our wine. I want to check in with the manager to make sure that things are running okay.
